The winners of the 2009 Crime Stoppers Youth Challenge were announced at a special ceremony held at the Wrest Point Casino in Hobart this afternoon.
This years Youth Challenge theme of, “Youth Violence” was dominated by Northern schools winning three of the four categories. There were over 1000 students from schools around Tasmania competing in the 82 teams registered for this year’s competition.
The Crime Stoppers Youth Challenge is a competition in which students conduct research, present their findings to the community, and create practical solutions to assist in preventing crime.
Students from public and private schools state-wide participated in the eighth Youth Challenge, which also aims to raise awareness and encourage the community to report information to Crime Stoppers.
The judging panel had the pleasure of reviewing a range of pieces of work of a very high standard. It was evident that a tremendous amount of work went into the submissions and that the students appeared to really enjoy researching this important issue.
The submissions included; web site designs, stories, poetry, booklets, pamphlets, posters, reports, multi-media presentations, victim stories, newspaper articles, scripts for radio or television productions, talks, debates, performances and games. Many of the schools also attracted local media attention with their research and/or activities.
Table Cape Primary, Cressy District High and the Burnie Youth Council were winners of this years age categories with technology widely used by this year’s winning entrants, which included high quality web-pages, DVD’s and advertisements were submitted for judging.
Chairman of the Board of Crime Stoppers Tasmania, Mr Brian Aherne commended all participants and their teachers on their efforts.
“The Challenge allows students to develop real-life skills, learn not just about crime and criminal processes, but also about interacting with the community and making a valuable contribution to solving crime,” Mr Aherne said.
“It was also exciting to see community youth groups also compete in this years Youth Challenge”, Mr Aherne said.
Students this year will be rewarded with a spectacular musical performance supported by ExitLeft Productions with a special guest appearance of the members of the Tasmanian Cast of High School Musical on stage.
Cash prices (to be shared between the schools and students) and certificates are awarded in three categories – Upper Primary, Lower Secondary, and Upper Secondary.

Bronze – Riverside High (Mikayla)
Highly Commended – Kingston High School
Gold – Burnie Youth Council
